I was inspired to create this work after witnessing Germany’s critical acknowledgement of its own history, especially in public settings.
The locations in this film “Disremembering” are from the No Man’s Land of the former Berlin Wall. I strolled through the No Man’s land from the South to the North and photographed there in 2018~2019. Afterwards I erased photo images by detergent and water. In Japan, we use this proverb often “to throw anything into the river (water)” which means the same as “let bygones be bygones”. This film created to examine the current political and social situation in my native country Japan and beyond.
What kinds of history can be passed to later generations? In what shape? And, how?
The short film shown as a part of her solo exhibition at Künstlerhaus Bethanien in Berlin in 2019.
